Delta Music Institute Awarded Grant from Mississippi Arts Commission

The Delta Music Institute (DMI) at Delta State University recently received a $4,300 project grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the $1.3 million in grants the Commission will award in 2020-21. The funds will be allocated to a virtual camp for high school students exploring entertainment industry career tracks in audio engineering, singer/songwriting, and instrumental performance.

Fireside Chat – June 24, 2019 – Director of Athletics, Mike Kinnison

Joining President LaForge is Mike Kinnison, Director of Athletics at Delta State.

For 26 years, Mike Kinnison served as coach of the Statesmen baseball. Coach Kinnison was tapped as the sixth Athletic Director in Delta State’s history in November, taking over for Dr. Ronnie Mayers, and continued to coach the Statesmen in the 2019 season. Earlier this month, he made the decision to move forward with his athletic director responsibilities full-time. Let’s reflect on Coach Kinnison’s illustrious career as the skipper for the DSU baseball program.

  • In his 23 seasons as a head coach, Coach Kinnison guided the Statesmen to the 2004 NCAA Division II national title, six College World Series appearances, six NCAA South/South Central Regional championships, and eight Gulf South Conference titles.
  • In 2004, he earned the ABCA “National Coach of the Year” award after leading the Statesmen to the program’s first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship.
  • He has also been named the Gulf South Coach of the Year six times and appropriately named “Coach of the Decade” by the GSC in 2010.

Fireside Chat – June 10, 2019 – Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Nienaber

Joining President LaForge is Mike Nienaber, the 16th head coach of Delta State men’s basketball.

Last month, Delta State announced the addition of Mike Nienaber to our athletic department, as the new head coach of the Statesmen men’s basketball team. Coach Nienaber is one of the NCAA DII’s most successful head coaches. Here are some numbers on the newest member of the DSU Family.

  • Coach Nienaber is the 16th head coach of men’s basketball.
  • His 593 career wins rank 11th among all active NCAA Division II head coaches.
  • In his illustrious 20-year career at Christian Brothers, he amassed a 351-224 record, winning two Gulf South Conference championships and the 2009 South Region championship.
  • He has been awarded the GSC Coach of the Year three times, and he was the recipient of the 2009 National Association of Basketball Coaches South Region Coach of the Year honor.

Fireside Chat – May 6, 2019 – Spring Commencement Graduates

President LaForge is joined by Charlie King and Ashley Griffin, two spring commencement graduates.

Commencement is one of President LaForge’s favorite events on campus, as it represents the culmination of our students’ dedication and hard work during their time at Delta State. This spring, we awarded approximately 500 degrees to a group of successful students who leave Delta State prepared to become leaders in a plethora of careers. LaForge personally extends his congratulations to them for their contributions to the Green and White, and we know they will continue on a path of greatness.

LaForge also want to thank our outstanding faculty and staff who help make Delta State a beacon of opportunity in the Delta. This has been another exceptional semester, and their guidance is at the root of these graduates’ achievements.
