CLEVELAND, Miss. – Shalandria Kince, a native of Shaw and 2019 graduate of Shaw High School, is expected to graduate from Delta State University in May 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in social work. Get to know her in this Statesman Spotlight.
Why did you choose your major?
I chose social work because of its commitment to helping individuals and their environment. I love that I have the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. I also love the diversity that social work has to offer. Social work is a growing profession where I am guaranteed a job in many different settings.
What groups are you involved in on campus?
I am involved in several groups on campus. I am a member of the Phi Alpha Honor Society where I serve as the president of the Eta Xi Chapter. I am also a member of the Social Work Club and the NACSW. I am also part of the National Society of Leadership and Success.
What are your long-term career aspirations?
My long-term career aspiration is to assist as many individuals as possible. After getting my bachelor’s degree, I plan to attend graduate school. I hope to become a traveling social worker helping people all around the world.
Why did you choose Delta State?
I chose Delta State because Delta State felt like home. When I visited the campus for orientation, everyone was so nice and helpful. Even after orientation, my advisors and professors made sure I was well prepared for my journey here at Delta State.
What’s an interesting fact most people don’t know about you?
One interesting fact about me that most people don’t know is that my favorite thing to do is watch YouTube. I love to watch other’s daily blogs, GRWM videos, makeup, and hair tutorials, etc.
What’s your go-to road trip snack?
My favorite road trip snack is the Takis Fuego Popcorn. I also like Sweet Tart Ropes with a cold lemon lime Gatorade.
What’s at the top of your travel bucket list and why?
At the top of my bucket list is Bali, Indonesia. I want to visit Bali because it is a beautiful place. I want to visit the beach with the pink sand and the famous Bali swing.
What’s your favorite restaurant in Cleveland?
My favorite restaurant in Cleveland is J&W Smokehouse. It is definitely the best barbecue in the Delta.
Who are 1 or 2 people who have made a big impact in your life?
The two people that have influenced me the most are my mother and grandmother. They both taught me a strong work ethic. I work hard, aim high, and value my relationships because of them. They have guided me and nurtured me throughout my life.
