Emergency Protocols

Fire Alarm/Building Evacuation

  • FIRE ALARM activation indicates a fire or building evacuation.
  • Do NOT assume the alarm is false; always consider alarm is authentic.
  • EVACUTAION – immediately evacuate at least 1000 feet from structure.
  • If you see fire or smoke before hearing/seeing an alarm, pull nearest fire alarm.
  • Do NOT use Elevator. ASSIST any elderly or disabled persons out of the building.
  • If you are in a class, STAY TOGETHER outside.
  • Report all emergencies to the UPD (6662-846-4155).
  • All persons should be at least 1000 feet away or as directed by first responders.

Medical Emergency

  • Call 911 IMMEDIATELY. Seconds Save Lives.
  • Report all medical emergencies or injuries to the UPD (662-846-4155).
  • AED (defibrillator) stations are strategically located on campus.

Tornado Warning (Shelter-in-Place)

  • LISTEN for overhead sirens. Follow OKRAlert or other warnings.
  • SHELTER IN PLACE (Weather): Use a ground-floor interior hallway/room.
  • Avoid any glass windows or doors.
  • Tornado Watch: Conditions favorable for a tornado.
  • Tornado Warning: A Tornado is indicated by radar or observation.
  • Tornado Emergency: Special warning reserved for an extreme life-threatening tornado in a populated area. (Catastrophic damage)
  • STAY sheltered until advised of an “all clear” by university officials.

Hostile Behavior

  • Remain calm and MOVE AWAY from situation!
  • Notify UPD (662-846-4155) or call 911.
  • Do NOT confront person or block their exit, as they can be dangerous.
  • Move to secure area and lock the door if you cannot leave.

Lockdown Campus (Shelter-in-Place)

  • Immediately SEEK SHELTER and remain during an emergency.
  • Use Shelter-In-Place when not safe to evacuate campus.
  • OKRAlert will advise Shelter-In-Place if hostile act occurs on or near campus.
  • RUN, HIDE, FIGHT protocols are in effect.
  • RUN: From affected area, OR AVOID: leave campus.
  • HIDE: Find are, such as classrooms, offices, dorm rooms, or closets, with a lock.
    • LOCK any door(s), close blinds or cover windows, turn off lights, and stay down.
    • STAY away from windows and doors. Use furnishings as barricades.
    • SILENCE all phone sounds.
  • FIGHT: If you are forced into an encounter, FIGHT with anything you can use.
  • Go to nearest secured area from hallway or lobby.
  • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ASSIST LAW ENFORCEMENT!
  • KEEP HANDS UP ABOVE HEADAND VISIBLE TO POLICE.
  • Do NOT put hands in your pockets.
  • Do NOT UNLOCK THE DOOR for anyone other than clearly identified police.
  • Do NOT return until official ALL CLEAR is issued.

Suspicious Package or Threat

  • If you observe suspicious item, do not touch or move it.
  • Clear area and call UPD (662-846-4155) immediately.
  • If caller informs you about explosive device:
    • Check caller ID on phone and capture information.
    • Note date and time of call and where received.
    • Ask caller where and when device was placed and any timing,
    • Observe any identifiers that may help: age, gender, speech, attitude, background noises, or accents.
  • If advised of suspicious item, written or e-mail:
    • Try not to handle letter or package. Save and report.
    • Note date, time, location, return address, or e-mail address.
  • REPORT ALL INCIDENTS AND SUSPICIOUS PERSONS.
