Navigating Success: Discover Your Course
Welcome!
Your first year of college is one of the most exciting, yet challenging, times of your life! College life is a new world: a time of explorations, self-reflection, enlightenment, and discovery.
First Year Seminar (FYS 100) is a course that introduces you as a college freshman (100) to the tools and resources available campus wide that, when properly utilized, helps you reach your ultimate college journey destination: GRADUATION. It explores various topics critical to the development of academic, social, and life-skills such as effective note-taking, time-management, conflict resolution, and cultural competency. As well, it assists you in successfully navigating university resources and procedures, developing basic academic skills, and finding your unique place as part of the Delta State community.
Transfer First Year Seminar (FYS 300) is a course that focuses on growing the skill set that you’ve already learned during your previous educational conquests. Under the mindset that growth is always possible, and the best can always be better, we dig deeper into the concepts introduced in FYS 100 with a focus on mindful evaluation and goal setting. The destination is the same as FYS 100: GRADUATION!
There is a Student Peer Mentor component to many of our sections. The Student Peer Mentors are returning students who have successfully navigated their own first year of college and are willing to share their knowledge with new students. These students are recruited directly by the First Year Seminar instructors they serve. This team of students loves Delta State University, and they want to help you develop that same sense of pride that they have!
Here at Delta State, we feel very strongly that the earlier you begin to feel a part of the DSU family, the more likely you are to experience success here. Your Statesman Journey and your Okra Life begin here – we can’t wait to see what you become!
