Coach Dave “Boo” Ferriss recently hosted Delta State University alumnus Jack Davis, a 1962 graduate and native of Drew, at the Ferriss Museum. Jacki Joe Davis came to Cleveland to show his friends and family why he gives back to his alma mater. Davis and his group were given a full tour of campus, complete with a visit to the Dave “Boo” Ferriss Museum guided by legendary Coach Ferriss himself.
Joining in the tour were Jeffrey Thompson, whose parents Ann and Mickey organized the event, Gary Bouse, chief development officer at the Delta State University Foundation, and Darlene and Ron Salisbury. Shareholder of the Texas Rangers, Salisbury grew up listening to and watching Coach Ferriss’ Red Sox career. His interest in a tour of the museum followed his reading of the book “Boo” written by Rick Cleveland. Salisbury received the book from Jack Davis and passed on a copy to Nolan Ryan and other owners of the Texas Rangers.
President William N. LaForge also joined the tour to visit with the alumni and relive the great moments Ferriss’s baseball history. President LaForge thanked Mr. Davis for his financial support of the University’s e-learning program that teaches Physics, Art, Physical Science, and Spanish courses to high school students throughout Mississippi. Since the establishment funding from Mr. Davis in 2004, the number of high schools participating in the program has increased from two schools and 75 students to thirty schools and 719 participating students. Examples of school systems participating in the e-learning program include the counties of Bolivar, Wilkinson, Jefferson, Webster, Coahoma, Montgomery, Kemper, and Tallahatchie. The e-learning program is housed in the College of Education and Human Sciences.
