Court Street to Cleveland: Walk to Lunch Day September 28

By September 26, 2012General

Cleveland and Delta State University, interwoven and vital to one another, are physically linked by Court Street, nine blocks of homes and apartments, churches, libraries, the county courthouse, offices, and businesses. The Court Street to Cleveland Program is designed to promote walking and healthy living while strengthening the bond between the city and the university.

Court Street to Cleveland will be hosting Walk to Lunch Day, Friday, September 28. Participants will walk from the intersection of Fifth Avenue and South Court Street to lunch in the historic downtown Cleveland area, where four establishments — A La Carte Alley, Christina’s Exquisite Edibles, Mississippi Grounds, and The Starving Musician — will offer them discounted lunches. After lunch, participants will walk back to the Delta State campus. The walk is approximately 0.7 mile each way.

Walk to Lunch Day participants should register between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Friday, September 28, at the Fifth Avenue/South Court Street intersection in front of Roberts LaForge Library on the Delta State campus.

Those who pre-register by Thursday, September 27, become eligible to win a free gift certificate from one of the four participating eateries. To pre-register, contact Leslie Magee, HCCI Health and Special Projects Coordinator, at 662-846-4567 or lmmagee@deltastate.edu.

Court Street to Cleveland is one part of the multi-faceted Healthy Campus/Community Initiative, which encourages a culture of health and wellness on the campuses of DSU and Cleveland schools and throughout the community at large. HCCI receives leadership from the College of Education at Delta State University and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation.

Other HCCI programs include Walk It Out Cleveland, in-school nutrition education, Fit-Tastic Fridays, health fairs, a mini-conference on health for local educators, OKRA Camp, and nutritional and fitness counseling.
