Special to this year’s event was the crowning of the Crawfish King, Jerry Ainsworth, and Crawfish Queen, Dot Bright ’62. Presented by Jeffrey Farris, alumni director, and Melissa Love, assistant director.

“These outstanding alumni awards were given in the form of royalty — complete with a green cape, crawfish beads, and a crawfish crown for their long-time service, support and dedication to their alma mater,” said Love. “The king and queen also took home a custom engraved wooden plaque, courtesy of Merigold Cabinets & Carpentry.”

“The Crawfish King and Queen is a fun way for the Bolivar County alumni planning committee to recognize outstanding alumni in Bolivar County,” said Gary Crews, Bolivar County Alumni Chapter president. “Dot and Jerry both bleed green.”

Other highlights from the scholarship fundraiser were guest speakers President William N. LaForge, head football coach Todd Cooley, Miss DSU Hannah Leflore, and Southern Tradition Tailgating’s combat tailgate vehicle.

Proceeds from tickets, the silent auction and sponsorships benefit the Liza Vaughn Memorial Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to incoming Delta State students from Bolivar County. The scholarship was established in 2011 and was named for past assistant director of Alumni Affairs, Liza Vaughn, who lost her battle with cancer in April of 2012.

Go Green Weekend returns

Delta State University is gearing up for its fourth annual Go Green Weekend on campus April 7-9.

Each spring, students, faculty, staff, alumni and Delta State supporters gather for a full schedule of live entertainment, tailgating, a cooking competition, sporting events and a Spring Preview Day on April 8 from the Office of Admissions.

The family friendly affair is a way for the Delta State community to celebrate all things green and white.

View the full schedule at www.deltastate.edu/gogreenweekend.

Spring Preview Day continues to grow each Go Green Weekend, as potential students have the opportunity to hear from campus leaders, meet faculty and staff, interact with current students and student organizations, enjoy campus tours, and be a first-hand fan at Delta State athletic events.

“We are focusing on high school juniors and seniors, as well as transfer students,” said Caitlyn Thompson, director of recruiting. “This year, we want our visitors to get the full experience of being a Statesman student. The Office of Admissions will provide information and answer questions, but these incoming students will also be able to engage with the broader Delta State community.”

Those interested in registering for Spring Visit Day are encouraged to sign up at www.deltastate.edu/gogreenweekend.

Go Green Weekend activities are open to the public, but tickets are required for entry into the baseball and softball games.

The schedule of events is coordinated by Delta State’s Office of Admissions, National Alumni Association, Department of Athletics and Office of Student Life.
