Scholarships

The American Legion Auxiliary #165 awards this scholarship to a student nurse. The selection is made by the American Legion Auxiliary #165 on the basis of recommendations from the faculty of the School of Nursing. Any student may apply, but preference is given to a veteran, or a relative of a veteran. Applicant must have a grade point average of 2.5 and must provide a statement of need for financial assistance and professional goals. The recipient of this award will continue to receive the annual award until graduation with the maintenance of a 2.5 GPA.

One scholarship/award will be given annually to a senior nursing student. The student must plan either graduate study in community health or employment in a health department; must demonstrate by performance the understanding of the principles of community health nursing and the complexities of communities, system, and citizens; and must exhibit enthusiasm, good will, good sense in effecting better public and personal health. First consideration is given to student from the nine-county area of Public Health District III: Attala, Bolivar, Carroll, Holmes, Humphreys, Leflore, Montgomery, Sunflower, andWashington. Otherwise, student must reside in Mississippi and have 3.0 overall G.P.A.

This scholarship was established April 2000 for full time Delta State School of Nursing undergraduate students. The student must exhibit good character, have an above average academic record and demonstrate involvement in activities that benefit the community – and/or the work setting. A brief resume that addresses the stated criteria and three (3) references are required. Applicants must write an essay on why they chose the profession of nursing and their motivation, commitment, and future goals. Additional information is available at the School of Nursing.

The King’s Daughters and Sons Circle Number Two Bessie J. Taylor Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a full-time nursing student who exhibits above-average academic record, demonstrates good character, and exhibits involvement in activity that benefits the community. Applicants must write an essay on why they chose the profession of nursing and their motivation, commitment, and future goals.

The Blake Surgical Endowed Nursing Scholarship is given to a student who demonstrates leadership qualities during the semesters prior to admittance to the Delta State University Robert E. Smith School of Nursing. The student must show financial need but must not receive funds from federal grants. Preference is given to a student who plans to work as a nurse in Bolivar County upon graduation.

Awarded to a Junior or Senior or a transfer student in their Junior or Senior year of DSU Nursing school. Preference given to Delta area students from Bolivar, Coahoma, Sunflower, or Washington counties. Minimum 3.0 GPA, shows financial need, renewable each year providing guidelines are met and selection committee: Dean of School of Nursing, Director of Financial Aid, Director of Admissions.

One scholarship will be given annually to a senior nursing student. The scholarship is given by Mr. and Mrs. Jerome C. Hafter and their son, Bryan, in appreciation for the nursing care he received at the The University of Mississippi Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The scholarship is administered through the March of Dimes and is given annually to a senior student who has expressed a desire to enter the field of neonatal or pediatric nursing and has maintained a 3.0 GPA.

This scholarship is awarded to an RN-BSN student during their full-time second semester of study. This student must be from the Delta area; have at minimum a 3.0 GPA during initial full-time semester in program; and demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities. The selection process will be by the School of Nursing Student Affairs Committee and the RN-BSN Key Liaison Faculty.

This scholarship was initiated by Janet Clark (niece of Dr. Powell) and endowed by Walker Powell (husband of Dr. Powell) in memory of Dr. Barbara Powell who served as Dean of DSU School of Nursing fro 1990-1997. Candidates for the scholarship must be at least a second semester Junior nursing student and must possess an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.

This scholarship was established in honor of Dr. R. T. & Kathryn Hollingsworth of Shelby, MS. It is awarded to a junior or senior nursing student (School of Nursing) and a junior or senior pre-med student (College of Arts and Sciences) enrolled at Delta State University. The recipient will be selected based on the academic requirement of a 3.0 GPA or higher and preference is given to students in the Duncan-Shelby or larger area of Bolivar County.

This scholarship was established by Alice Clay Smith in memory of her parents, Dr. Thomas F. and Delia Fewell Clay, and to help promote the ideals of Dr. Clay, who practiced medicine in Tutwiler, MS for 69 years. Dr. Clay’s ideals were to use his medical skills in serving patients with love and compassion and to treat the person as a human not a number.  The student selected for this scholarship must be enrolled as a full-time student in the School of Nursing, a resident of Mississippi, and in good academic standing. The scholarship may be awarded once in the fall semester and one in the spring semester. 

This scholarship was established by the King’s Daughters School of Nursing Alumni in 1988. This scholarship will be given to one student in the spring semester of the junior year who is nominated by the Delta State University Nursing faculty. The student must reside in Washington or Sunflower County, demonstrate above average abilities in nursing clinical practice and classroom theory, demonstrate ethical behavior in all courses in the nursing program, and have at least a 3.0 G.P.A. in nursing course work.

The Ellis Family Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Irby C. Ellis and Mrs. Bobbie Shaw Ellis. This scholarship is awarded to a senior nursing student with a 3.0 overall GPA or higher.

This scholarship was established by the Trustee members of the Salvadore A. & Maria Grace Serio Feduccia Memorial Scholarship Fund is awarded to a student enrolled full-time in the DSU Robert E Smith School of Nursing, with the special intention that it assist those students who have a financial need, intend to live and work in Mississippi (especially the Delta region), and maintain a GPA of 3.0.

This scholarship was established in November of 1999 by John and Jutta K. Ferretti of Shelby in memory of Lt. Josephine Ferretti Schmid, sister of John Ferretti. Lt. Schmid served a M.A.S.H. unit in the U. S. Army Nurse Corps in Europe during World War II. In addition, the scholarship is given in memory of Margaret Karnstedt, RN and Kathe Wahlstab Karnstedt, RN, MRs. Jutta Ferretti’s aunt and great-aunt respectfully. It was also established in honor of Mrs. Jutta Ferretti’s neice, Jill Winzen Skyles, RN, BSN, M.B.A. The scholarship is available alternately to a senior and a graduate student enrolled in the School of Nursing and has maintained a GPA of 3.5.

This scholarship was established by John and Pat Hilpert, and represents the Hilpert family commitment to the fields of education and healthcare. The scholarship is designated to provide financial assistance to a qualified student enrolled in the BSN program, and provides support through the completion of his/her degree program. Applicants for the scholarship must be admitted to the nursing program (junior year) and indicate need. The recipient will retain the scholarship through the 2+ years of his/her training until the BSN is earned.

Smith-Kittle Endowed Nursing Scholarship

The Eugene Kittle, Sr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established by Mr. Teddy Kittle in memory of his father, Eugene Kittle, Sr.. The Kate Kittle Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of Teddy Kittle’s sister, Kate Kittle, who was a nurse. The Kate Smith Kittle Memorial Scholarship was established by Mr Kittle in memory of his mother, who was also a nurse. The Smith-Kittle Endowed Nursing Scholarship was established by Mr. Kittle in memory of the Smith Family of Kate Smith Kittle, mother of Mr. Teddy Kittle, and the Kittle family of Eugene Kittle, Sr., father of Mr. Teddy Kittle.

The Kennedy Joli Smith Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established in memory of Kennedy Joli Smith, daughter of Joe and Alice Smith. This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior nursing student enrolled at Delta State University. The recipient will be selected based on writing of an essay on an assigned topic, typically regarding their career goals in nursing.

This scholarship is given by the United Methodist Men’s Club for a nursing student in the Robert E. Smith School of Nursing.

Mississippi School of Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship is given by Mississippi Nurses Foundation through monies raised from Nursing car tag sales.

The North Sunflower Medical Center Futures Scholarship was established by the administration of North Sunflower Medical Center to assist deserving nursing students achieve their goal of becoming registered nurses. Applicants for this scholarship must be a full time student in the School of Nursing and have appropriate need for the scholarship. Preference is given to students from Sunflower County.

Male student, from one of the 18 counties of the Mississippi Delta Area identified by the Delta Council: Bolivar, Carroll, Coahoma, Desoto, Holmes, Humphries, Issaquena, Leflore, Panola, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflowers, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tunica, Warren, Washington, and Yazoo, 2.5 GPA minimum. Must display financial need confirmed by Financial Aid

The Penny & Willard Samuels Nursing Scholarship is given by Willard Samuels (Cleveland, MS) to help a deserving student achieve their goal of becoming a registered nurse.

Mr. Daniel P. and Louise H. Glenn wanted to help a nursing student so they established the Daniel P. Glenn and Mary Louise H. Glenn Presidential Annual Scholarship fund. Mrs. Louise H. Glenn is a 2012 graduate of the Robert E. Smith School of Nursing.

This scholarship is given by Ms. Valencia Payne, a BSN graduate, to provide financial assistance to full-time African-American or Latino American nursing student who is in good standing at the university, demonstrates financial need, and maintains a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) while enrolled full-time at DSU.

Robert E. Smith of Cleveland, Mississippi created these scholarships to assist worthy nursing students. These scholarships are awarded annually to pre-nursing or nursing students. The student must be enrolled full time, demonstrate good character, exhibit involvement in activity that benefits the community, and maintain a grade of “B” or higher.

The Bolivar Medical Center Auxiliary awards each year a scholarship to a junior nursing student at DeltaState University. The scholarship is in honor of Sherry Van Liew. The Auxiliary prefers the student be a resident of Bolivar County. The student selected for this scholarship must: (1) have at least a 3.0 grade point average, (2) demonstrate a dedication to excellence in clinical practice, (3) provide a statement of need. This statement must be written in his/her own words, and (4) provide a statement of personal goals for his/her practice as a professional nurse.

Currently enrolled or accepted student at DSU at any undergraduate level. Currently enrolled as a full-time student in the BSN program. Minimum 3.2 GPA, demonstrates financial need as judged by the Office of Financial Aid and Office of Admissions, meets all university criteria in order to maintain scholarship.
