Art, Architecture and Culture of Vienna:
DSU 2019 Summer Study in Vienna, Austria
Sponsored by the Department of Art and Continuing Education at Delta State University
Information Meeting on Thursday, October 4, 4:00 pm, HNA 151

Vienna is one of the world’s foremost centers of art, architecture and music, home to some of the greatest museum collections in the world. Now a modern metropolis, Vienna was once the capital of the Habsburg empire, the relics of its glorious past – Gothic cathedrals, Baroque palaces and churches, majestic boulevards, a range of historicist buildings, and Art Nouveau architecture – endow the city with a rich historical dimension and offer the opportunity to study several centuries of art history in one place.

Over the course of 2 weeks, we will visit many of Vienna’s great museums including the Kunsthistorische Museum, whose holdings include numerous examples familiar to students from their art history survey classes, the Belevedere’s collection of Sezession artists Klimt, Schiele, and Kokoschka, the new Museumsquartier, home to several museums dedicated to modern and contemporary art, take a field trip to the Roman legionary city of Carnuntum, immerse ourselves in the Middle Ages with a visit to a medieval fortress, see various Baroque churches, tour a Rococo palace that rivals Versailles in France, compare the historicist buildings along the Ringstrasse, and explore the complexity of fin-de-siècle Vienna as exemplified by its Art Nouveau architecture and the work of the Sezession artists.

Of course, a visit to Vienna is not complete without also partaking in the local culture, thus we will attend the opera one evening, sample the local cuisine, try coffee at a real Viennese Kaffeehaus, tour a wine cellar and sample some of its offerings.

Participants can earn up to 6 academic credit hours for this trip by registering for a variety of art and art history courses.
