Dr. Jamie Dahman, Mississippi Humanities Council Presentation

March 5, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Each year, state colleges and universities across the state of Mississippi nominate one humanities faculty member to receive a Mississippi Humanities Council Award.
This year, Delta State University’s nominee is Dr. Jamie Dahman, assistant professor of music.

“I’m honored to have been nominated by my department chair, Dr. Karen Fosheim, and by Dean Breaux,” said Jamie. “I feel fortunate to work with such supportive colleagues and administrators. They could have picked any number of faculty from a humanities area in the College of Arts and Sciences. I’m honored and humbled that they nominated me.”
Dahman will give a lecture-recital on Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at 7 p.m. in the Choral Rehearsal Room in Zeigel Hall on the Delta State Campus. His presentation is called “Bulgarian Art Song: History, Development, and Performance.”

“I was fortunate to have been a Fulbright Fellow from January 2012 – May 2012. While studying at the Academy of Music, Dance, and Fine Art in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, I was able to collect several collections of Bulgarian classical song. From those, I curated a volume of Bulgarian art songs called Bulgarian Art Song. I’m happy anytime I can share this music with an audience. It deserves a place alongside the standard vocal repertoire for a singer.”

Dahman has been at Delta State since 2016. He teaches applied voice, lyric diction, and vocal pedagogy. He also serves as an Okra Scholars mentor and is the campus Fulbright Program Adviser and Scholar Liaison.

“In addition to sharing what I learned during my time as a Fulbright Fellow, I hope I can get students and faculty interested in pursuing opportunities through Fulbright,” he said. “It’s a life-changing, and life-affirming, experience I’ll never forget!”

A short reception will follow the presentation. Jamie will attend the Mississippi Humanities Council Gala later this spring.
