Delta State announces Dr. Tyrone Jackson as commencement speaker

CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State University is delighted to announce that Dr. Tyrone Jackson, president of Mississippi Delta Community College, will be the distinguished speaker at the upcoming Spring 2024 Commencement ceremonies. The ceremonies will take place at the Walter Sillers Coliseum on May 10, with two separate sessions scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Jackson, a native of Rosedale and an esteemed alumnus of Delta State University, brings a wealth of experience and insight to the commencement podium. Having graduated from Delta State with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Studies and Sociology in 1994, he remained at DSU to complete a Master of Education degree in Social Sciences and Sociology in 1998, and a Doctor of Education degree in Professional Studies in 2005.

Throughout his illustrious career, Jackson served Delta State University in various capacities, embodying the institution’s values of excellence and service. From his tenure as an Admissions Counselor to his leadership roles as Assistant Dean of Graduate and Continuing Studies and Interim Dean of Graduate and Continuing Studies, Jackson consistently demonstrated a commitment to fostering academic success and student development.

Following his tenure at Delta State, Jackson continued to make significant contributions to higher education, serving in leadership roles at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Hinds Community College. In July 2019, he assumed the presidency of Mississippi Delta Community College, further solidifying his dedication to advancing educational opportunities in the Mississippi Delta.

Jackson’s exemplary leadership and commitment to education have been recognized and celebrated throughout his career. He has been honored with memberships in prestigious organizations such as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and the Mississippi Humanities Council, reflecting his profound impact on the field of higher education.

The Spring 2024 Commencement will celebrate the achievements of 379 candidates for degrees, including 266 bachelor’s degrees, 93 master’s degrees, 14 educational specialist degrees, and 6 doctoral degrees. As these graduates embark on their professional journeys, Delta State University extends its heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for their future endeavors.

DSU Registrar Joi Phillips said, “Commencement signifies the culmination of years of dedication and effort. Congratulations to our students! We are so excited for them to begin their professional journey. We also extend a warm welcome to their families visiting our campus, as we collectively celebrate this significant milestone.”
