Hazing is any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them, regardless of a person’s willingness to participate. Hazing does not just happen in Greek-lettered organizations, and it does not start when a student enters the college or university setting. Elements of hazing can appear in any group setting because it is an organizational culture issue. Hazing can take many forms, and it may present itself as “tradition” or “rituals.” In Greek Life at Delta State University, we believe in “respect over rituals” because true team spirit is built on trust.
Our Greek-lettered councils, the College Panhellenic Council (CPH), Interfraternity Council (IFC), and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), believe in the tenets of the Stop Hazing Pledge Campaign and as students leaders, we strive to lead by example by promoting healthy group dynamics in every space we are members of in addition to creating healthy, safe, and inclusive environments for all.
