Delta State’s 97th Anniversary
September 15, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Thursday, 15 September 2022 marks the 97th anniversary of students, faculty, staff and administrators embarking on a new journey.
97 years ago, 97 students prepared for classes. Since that time, thousands upon thousands of students have discovered their life journeys under the guidance and instruction of dedicated faculty and staff. With each year that moves us closer to our centennial years, we recognize the gift those first students, faculty, staff and the townspeople of Cleveland have passed on to us. Almost ten decades of learning, educating, decision making, trusting and enduring bring us all together to the threshold of centennial status. 100 years ago this September, a group of invested citizens, lead by Judge Audley W. Shands, recognized the valuable resource of three abandoned buildings at the end of Court Street and “spoke of the cultural value” a state-supported college would bring to the Delta community. According to records, this was the first public mention of locating a college in Cleveland. Within three years of bringing this idea to the table, Delta State Teachers College would begin the journey that we today claim a part of. This year, the program will be held in the Lena Roberts Sillers Chapel, a historical property on Delta State’s campus which has benefited from the Dedicated Statesmen Association’s care and attention over the past several years. Special guests will share memories and observations of their time at Delta State. Please join members of the Dedicated Statesmen, current faculty, staff, administration and students inside the chapel for this noon program. This event is free and open to the public.
