The Delta State University flag will fly at half-staff from Tuesday, December 26, through sunset on Thursday, December 28, in honor of Delta State Professor Emeritus of Art, Sammy Britt, of Cleveland, Mississippi. Britt passed away on December 18, 2023. He was 83.
Professor Sam “Sammy” Glenn Britt taught Painting and Drawing at Delta State University for 38 years, and he truly cared about each student. He also taught painting workshops for many years, and he practiced the art of seeing and painting color through the language of the limitless light keys of nature.
During his career, Professor Britt was honored to receive numerous awards including: Institute of Arts & Letters 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award, 2017 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Visual Arts, 2019 Delta State University Alumni Award, and Delta State University’s 2002 S.E. Kossman Outstanding Teacher Award.
A celebration of Sammy’s Life will be held at Studio 230, 110 S Court Street in Cleveland on Wednesday, December 27, at 2:30pm.
