Delta State University Chorale Spring Concert April 16

By April 12, 2019

Delta State University Chorale will present their return from tour and annual spring concert on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at 7:30 PM in the Bologna Performing Arts Center, under the direction of Dr. Julia Thorn. The concert is free and open to the public.

There will be a tremendous variety of musical style represented on the program: Handel and Brahms will be complemented by contemporary composers; compositions also will include folk songs, musical theater arrangements, spirituals, and classical works. In addition to the Chorale, a newly formed chamber ensemble will present madrigals, Shaker tunes, and “In Vino Veritas,” a favorite of students.

Plus, “Only in Sleep,” with a voice solo by Laurissa Backlin, assistant professor of music, will be sung in tribute to Margaret Walker, a major benefactor to the choral program.

“I have so enjoyed my work with the students of Chorale and Chamber Singers throughout this year,” said Thorn. “They are bright individuals who bring a sense of pride in belonging to this musical organization, which has grown in quality tremendously this year. As the conductor, I am happy to be a part of this very special musical community.”

Thorn, director of choral activities, graduated with B.M. and M.M. degrees in voice from Loyola University in New Orleans and a D.M.A. degree in Conducting from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She was professor of music at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., and Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa., before accepting the vocal coordinator position at Delta State.
