Students from the Delta State University Choral Ensembles will present Choral Incantations in concert on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bologna Performing Arts Center. The performance will be presented by the Delta Women’s Singers, Delta Singing Statesmen and the Delta Chorale. These ensembles are conducted by professor Kevin Tharpe and Dr. Julia Thorn, the new DSU director of Choral Activities.
Delta Singers program will feature music from a variety of historical periods written for the treble voice. Featured in this section of the concert is a piece titled “Set Me As a Seal” that is written for women’s voices, piano and flugel horn performed by music faculty member Michael Elizey. “The lovely Seal Lullaby” by Eric Whitcare, will be led by student conductor Mallary Morrow.
Delta Singing Statesmen will feature music of master composers Schubert, Mendelssohn and Rachmaninoff interspersed with a spiritual and sea shanty written for male voices. Student conductors will include Gunter McCourt and Tyler Gunn.
The Delta Chorale will conclude the program with a Michael Haydn extended work that features a solo quartet comprised of Gillian Oakley, Julia Westmorland, Caleb Chambers and Elijah Davison. Additional works on the concert include some moments of magical incantations and love songs. The commissioned piece for the Mississippi bicentennial will be performed once again under the direction of student conductor Gunter McCourt.
