DSU Music Department to Present Flute Ensembles Concert

L-R: Piper Gillam, Lex Johnson, Emily Hargett, Sarah McCann, Dr. Shelley Collins, Britney Hammer

CLEVELAND, Miss. — On Tuesday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. the Delta State University Department of Music will present a Flute Ensembles Concert in the Bologna Performing Arts Center Recital Hall.

The DSU Flute Ensemble includes music education majors Piper Gillam, Lex Johnson, Sarah McCann, Emily Hargett, and Britney Hammer and is directed by Dr. Shelley Collins, Professor of Music. Cellist David Kyuhyeon Cho, an audio engineering major from Seoul, South Korea, will join the flutists on several pieces.

Collins remarked that there are several new elements to this year’s concert. “My students asked me if we could start a recorder ensemble to perform music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. This isn’t the sound you might remember from your third-grade music class; the recorder is actually a serious instrument that was popular in European courts for centuries. Our students are playing musically on soprano, tenor, and bass recorders, which sound beautiful together.”

Additionally, under Dr. Collins’s supervision, several flute majors have been teaching private lessons to local middle school flute students this year, who will join in a performance with their teachers for the concert finale.

This concert is free and open to the public. For more information, please call the Music Department at 662-846-4615.
