Seven Delta State Piano Students Attend State Competitions

Seven piano students from the Department of Music at Delta State University attended the 2019 State Conference of the Mississippi Music Teachers Association (MMTA) and the State Competitions of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Competitions held at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus on Nov. 1-2, 2019.

The students were Joseph Campbell (junior), Semi Dong (senior), Yeim Kim (junior), Young Hye Min (senior), Sung-Eun Ryu (senior), Cameron Sullivan (freshman), and Andrew Wasylina (sophomore).

Three of them participated in the Young Artist Division of the MTNA state competitions. Min from Ulsan, South Korea, won alternate (second place) in the division;  a student of Dr. Jung-Won Shin, associate professor of music, she is pursuing a bachelor of music degree in piano performance. Ryu from Hwaseong, South Korea, and Kim from Seoul, South Korea, performed at master classes given by the guest clinicians of the conference. Ryu is a student of Dr. Karen Fosheim, chair of the department, and Kim is a student of Dr. Shin. Both are working toward a bachelor of music degree in piano performance.

MMTA’s annual conference featured performances, workshops, master classes, and newly composed music, in addition to competitions to develop both student and teacher skills.

The trip was partially funded by the Department of Music.
