Joining President LaForge to talk about the Child Safety Summit is John Clark, President and CEO of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, referred to as NCMEC.

Delta State University recently hosted an important summit titled the “Child Safety Summit: Understanding Child Trafficking, Exploitation, and Abuse” which was a daylong event and included national, regional, and state experts in the prevention of child human trafficking. Here are some figures on the topics discussed at the summit.

•1 in 5 children is sexually solicited while on the internet; about 35% of victims are 11 years old or younger
•In 2015, there were 8,730 victims of abuse or neglect in Mississippi alone, a rate of 12 per 1,000 children, an increase of 3.5% from 2014.
•Of these children, 75% were neglected, 15% were physically abused, and 10% were sexually abused.
•In 2016, the National Human Trafficking Hotline received a total of 34,000 phone calls, emails, or online tip reports nationwide and 2,300 children were reported as victims.
