Born in Seoul, Korea, Kim began studying piano at age 5. She earned bachelor of music and master of music degrees at Seoul National University (SNU) in Korea and a doctoral degree in piano performance at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Her teachers were Nak-Ho Paik and Louis Nagel.
Kim’s numerous awards include distinguished graduate of Seoul Arts High School, second prize in the JoongAng Music Concours, first prize in the YeEum Ensemble Concours, first prize in the Seoul National University Ensemble Competition, second prize in the Romantic Piano Competition sponsored by Donald Morlock, and first prize in the annual Concerto Competition sponsored by the University of Michigan.
Awarded a Merit scholarship by the SNU Department of Music, Kim was selected as the top graduate and performed a debut concert in Sejong Cultural Center representing all SNU graduates of the year. She also received “Tuesday Musicale of Detroit” and Nell B. Stockwell scholarships while studying in the U.S.
Kim’s performances include a recital sponsored by the Steinway Piano Company, an invitational concert sponsored by the Beethoven Society, Contemporary Music Concerts, and a concert on works by a Korean composer at the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall. She has appeared with the Seoul City Orchestra, the Prime Philharmonic Orchestra in Seoul and Kimpo, South Korea, and the Michigan Symphony Orchestra.
Starting as a member of Ye Piano Trio in high school, Kim has continued to organize chamber music groups: Ensemble Music C, Ensemble Piano Party, and Piano Madang. Among several ensemble teams she has participated in, she is particularly interested in “Co-ap concert,” which performs music with Western and Korean classical musicians. She maintains a full performance schedule as a recitalist, orchestral soloist, and chamber musician, performing a wide spectrum of repertoire, from the standard works of piano literature to contemporary Korean music.
Her CD of Czerny’s The School of velocity Op.299 was released by Ilsong Media in Korea.
Besides musical activities, Kim’s interests extend to the genre of visual arts. Her pictures drawn by digital tools have influenced digital artists. She and digital artists have collaborated on 3D animation works displayed in the Incheon Art Platform in 2018. In this way she is making new attempts to implement music in arts from a different angle.
As a lecturer and performer, Kim has participated in the Kusatsu Camp in Japan, the Hannover International Summer Music Camp in Germany, the Evian International Music Camp in France, Fontenay-le-Comte Music Academy in France, and Couchevelle 1650 Music Academy in France.
