Miller named new director of Career Services

Delta State University recently announced Jim Miller as the new director of Career Services at the institution.

Delta State University Career Services assists undergraduate, graduate students and alumni in continuing their career journeys. Services include résumé consultations, career coaching, job postings, job search planning, workshops on interviewing and business etiquette skills, on-campus interviews and much more.

Miller, a native of Tupelo, Mississippi, is thrilled to begin his new role at Delta State.

“I’m very excited to join the team at Delta State,” said Miller. “I have a background in higher education at Mississippi College. All of my family is from the Delta, and they’ve been here a long time. I’m happy to be back in the Delta and work for a school that serves this region.”

Miller said one of his first priorities will be to strengthen the bridge between students and employers.

“I have a passion for students, and I love working with employers,” he added. “Outside of higher education, I’ve worked in a lot of sectors, so I think I have a good understanding of both sides.”

Miller comes to Delta State after previously serving in the director’s position for Career Services at Mississippi College. Prior to that role, he served as the director of employer relations and events in the same department. He also worked as the department’s assistant director. Additionally, Miller previously worked as an executive support specialist for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi.

He received his Master of Science in higher education administration from Mississippi College in 2016. As an undergraduate, he studied political science at the University of Mississippi.

Dr. Vernell Bennett, vice president for Student Affairs at Delta State, said she’s excited to bring Miller’s leadership to campus.

“Mr. Miller comes with a strong background in Career Services, including innovative initiatives and programming, and he has an excellent record of collaborating across a campus in support of student success,” said Bennett. “I’m looking forward to the skillset and energy he will add to the Career Services unit.”
