The 2012 winners are coming back with experience!

The Delta State University Alumni Association has finalized plans for the 28th annual Pig Pickin’ on September 27 and 28 at Statesmen Park. One of the main components of festival is the BBQ Cook Team Competition. Team applications have been rolling in since July, and it is not too late to sign up.

This year’s competition will be divided into two segments. Friday night, teams will compete in the auxiliary categories, which include booth decorations, sauce, beans and sausage-any-way. Saturday, teams will compete in the championship categories, which include chicken, ribs and pork.

Trophies or plaques and cash prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place finishers in most every category, and the grand prize of $500 and a trophy will be awarded to the team with the highest combined score of the three championship categories.

“We’ve not only grown the cooking competition categories, but we’ve also increased the number of teams in the competition each year,” said Jeffrey Farris, director of Alumni Affairs. “We feel that this year will be another successful Cook Team Competition.”

“We’re very excited about the restructuring of the Pig Pickin’ 2013 BBQ competition,” said Dana George, assistant athletic director. “For the booth decoration competition, we are asking teams to dress up their designated sites in coordination with President LaForge’s statement that Delta State is a ‘University of Champions.’ Whether you’re a BBQ rookie or a seasoned competitor, we hope you’ll consider joining us for Pig Pickin’ 2013.”
