Run/Walk 5K Challenge Receives Good Participation

By June 11, 2013General

Over 75 youth and adults participated in HCCI’s 5K Run/Walk Challenge.

The Walk It Out Cleveland program, part of the Healthy Campus/Community Initiative (HCCI), sponsored a free 5k run or walk at the Delta State Fitness Trail on Saturday, June 8.

The race was open to the public, and each participant received a t-shirt and water bottle. Over 65 racers ran or walked the 3.1 miles course on the Fitness Trail and through the Delta State campus. Eleven youth participated in the 800 meter kid’s fun run following the 5K.

“We could not have asked for a more perfect day for our event! The weather was beautiful. We had amazing volunteers and 76 enthusiastic participants ages 3 to 64. I was especially excited to see the numerous groups of families and friends walking, running, and having fun together. That is what our events are all about, to ‘Have Fun and Get Fit’,” said Krista Davis, coordinator of HCCI and registered dietitian.

Approximately 20 volunteers took part in making race day a success by performing duties such as traffic control, photography, course set-up, aid station assistance, course marshaling, participant registration, and race time tracking.

First place winner of the 5K male division was Omar Sharabati of Cleveland, and first place winner of the 5K female division was Rachel Anderson of Cleveland.  William and Margaret Katembe and family of Cleveland won first place in the 5K family division. First place winner of the youth fun run was Zachary Parris of Batesville.

Cleveland native Shannon T. Bastari said, "I appreciate having the opportunity for my family to participate in the 5k this past weekend.  This was such a fun activity provided by Delta State. They are leading Cleveland in the right direction to be healthier.  I look forward to the next event for such beneficial family bonding time!"

HCCI is funded by the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation and operates under Delta State’s College of Education. HCCI offers additional programs including fitness classes, health fairs, O.K.R.A. Camp, Court Street to Cleveland, and educational events and material.

The Delta State Fitness Trail is a half-mile course that was completed in 2009. In a recent upgrade, fitness stations were added to offer a convenient variety of exercises.  The well-lit trail is open 24 hours a day to the public helping to promote health and fitness throughout the Delta State and Cleveland communities.
