On June 21, the Crosstie Arts Council presented a donation of $500 towards the Janice Wyatt Mississippi Summer Arts Institute (MSAI), a subsidiary program of the Bologna Performing Arts Center. Now in its 16th summer, MSAI has become a model for the development and advancement of young artists. Held on the campus of Delta State University, MSAI offers students a unique opportunity to gain broad exposure to all art-forms, including dance, music, theater, visual arts, and literary arts. The goal of MSAI is to encourage promising artists to begin or continue their pursuits in the arts.
The Crosstie Arts Council makes this donation to the Janice Wyatt Mississippi Summer Arts Institute in recognition of the Crosstie Arts and Jazz Festival Exhibit Coordinators, Deborah Cox and Mary McKay Lasker for giving of their time and talent to make the juried Art and other exhibitor booths a successful part of the Crosstie annual Festival.
“This generous donation given by the Crosstie Arts Council will help to sustain and strengthen this high-quality arts enrichment opportunity for young artists,” stated Whitney Cummins, BPAC Arts Education Coordinator. “The Bologna Performing Arts Center is extremely grateful for the continuous support provided by the Crosstie Arts Council.”
The 2013 Mississippi Summer Arts Institute kicked off on June 16 with Arts Camp, a two-week residential camp for young artists ages 12-18. Daily Classes offered at camp include dance, vocal and instrumental music, visual arts, literary arts, and theater. The courses provide excellent opportunities for artistic development for those with previous arts training, as well as those who are getting their first exposure to the arts. Arts Camp culminates with a visual arts exhibition and literary arts reading on Friday, June 28 at 7:00 PM, and a final performance on Saturday, June 29 at 10:00 AM. Both events are held at the Bologna Performing Arts Center and are open to the public. The Mississippi Summer Arts Institute continues with PLUS Camp, a one-week performance –based day camp for young artists ages 5-12, beginning on Monday, July 15 and culminating with a final performance on Saturday, July 20.
