Delta State University staff members participated in the 20th annual Staff Development Day on Tuesday, May 14. Delta State Staff Council organized a day of professional development sessions including topics of leadership, financial management, and health and wellness.

A breakfast and welcome began the day followed by a general development session led by Amy D. Whitten, J.D., principal of The Whitten Group in Ridgeland, Miss. The Whitten Group is a management and consulting firm that uses practical and integrated approaches to attain success through creative design and hard work. She provided strategies for thriving in the work force as well as outside of the office.

“Strategies for thriving include change in ourselves and change in our world,” said Whitten. She quoted Hannah Curlee from the television show The Biggest Loser, “When you change your mind, you change your life.”

Whitten also led a breakout session covering leadership. A financial management session was directed by Clay McWilliams, M & F Bank branch president and Doug Pinkerton, head coach for the Delta State Cross Country team, lead a session covering ways to cope with stress and other health and wellness issues. Lunch was provided in Young Mauldin Cafeteria on campus.

Field activities were held after lunch on the intramural fields at the Delta State Fitness Trail to enhance employee networks, develop team building skills, and promote physical fitness.
