Alumni Association Announces Summer Picnic Schedule

By May 30, 2013General

The Delta State University Alumni Association recently announced its summer picnic travel schedule. The Alumni Association staff will be traveling to New York City, Atlanta, and Washington D.C. for the annual Mississippi picnics this June.

“The Alumni Association is thrilled to get to visit with alumni from these three metropolitan areas,” said Jordan Thomas, assistant director of Alumni Affairs. “We feel it is important to have a presence at these events and to help alumni in the area celebrate their alma mater.”

The 34th Annual NY/MS picnic in Central Park is June 8 from noon to 6:00 p.m.  This year’s event will be held at Center Road at the 72nd Street and 5th Avenue entrance, which is between the Naumberg Bandshell and Sheeps Meadow. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Mississippi’s Country Music Trail,” and the honored guest is Governor William Winter, the 58th governor of Mississippi from 1980-1984. For a full schedule of events, visit the group’s Facebook page: New York/Mississippi Picnic.

The Mississippi Society of Georgia’s annual Mississippi in the Park is June 15 at Chastain Park. The picnic is from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There are a variety of activities planned this year including a Golf Tournament and two Atlanta Braves games. For more information on this event, visit the society’s website www.MSsocietyofGA.org.

The 2013 Mississippi on the Mall is June 22 in Washington D.C. at Henry Bacon Drive Ball Field, located at 23rd St. and Constitution Avenue NW. For more information, visit www.mississippisociety.com.

Each picnic has representatives from Mississippi including the majority of the state’s public and private institutions of higher learning. Delta State will have representatives from campus to give updates, promotional items available, information from admission and other campus departments, and much more. This also gives a chance for alumni to refer a student to attend Delta State and connect back with their alma mater.

In true Mississippi fashion, fried catfish and sweet tea will be served at all three events. The picnics celebrate all things Mississippi and give native Mississippians in the area a chance to get a little piece of home in the big city.
