Delta State to host 14th Annual Elliot-Nowell-White Science Symposium

By July 23, 2010General

Delta State University will play host to The 14th Annual Elliott-Nowell-White-Science Symposium, Thursday, Oct. 20 and Friday, Oct. 21.

Dedicated to the advancement of medicine through research, the symposium was established in 1992 by Doctors Robert L. and Mary C. Elliott of the Elliott-Elliott-Head Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Center (EEH) in Baton Rouge, La. Its purpose is to introduce Delta State students and faculty to outstanding scientists of international stature whose careers in research serve as role models for students majoring in the Sciences.

This year’s program will feature lectures by the following: Dr. Robert Elliott; Dr. James Holland, Distinguished Professor of Neoplastic Disease at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, N.Y., N.Y.; Dr. Steinar Aamdal, Senior Oncologist, and Head of the Department of Clinical Cancer Research, The Norwegian Radium Hospital, University of Oslo, Norway; Dr. Kenneth Peterson, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Shreveport; and Dr. Mark S. Elliott; Plastic Surgeon, Meridian, Miss.

Other speakers are Reginald Herrington and Emily Boykin, recent participants in the Elliott Research Fellowship Program sponsored by The Elliott-Elliott-Head Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Center, Baton Rouge, La. Each summer, outstanding Delta State students are given the opportunity to participate in leading cancer research at the Mastology Research Institute, the research arm of the EEH Center in Baton Rouge.

Dr. Robert Elliott will open the symposium with the Armchair Session Thursday, Oct. 20, at 3:30 p.m., Caylor Hall, Room 105. His topic “In Search of Excellence” is Dr. Elliott’s way of “lighting the fire within” today’s students to take up the banner of excellence and strive to achieve greatness.

The Johnny Outz Memorial Lectures, also presented on Oct. 20 will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Jobe Hall. They will include: “New Aspects About the Cause of Breast Cancer,” by Dr. James Holland and “Cancer Vaccines and Chemotherapy: Friend or Foe,” by Dr. Steinar Aamdal.

The Roy Lee Wiley Lecture Series, which opens Oct. 21 at 8:30 a.m., Caylor Hall, Room 205 will begin with accounts of their summer experiences at the Mastology Research Institute by students, Reginald Herrington and Emily Boykin.  The program continues with a presentation, “Vibrio Cholerae – an Ancient Scourge with State-of-the-art Virulence Mechanisms,” by Dr. Kenneth Peterson, and concludes with “The Art of Beauty,” by Dr. Mark Elliott.

The Elliott-Nowell-White-Science Symposium is a part of The Elliott Program of Excellence, a multi-faceted endeavor that benefits students from all walks of life at Delta State University. It is held each year in honor of H. L. Nowell and Dr. Jesse S. White.

The symposium is free to the public. All interested students and non-students are invited to attend. For more information, contact the Office of Biological and Physical Sciences at Delta State University, at (662) 846-4240.
