Delta State invites aspiring artists to campus for Spring Portfolio Day

By July 23, 2010General

The Delta State University art department will host its annual Spring Portfolio Day, Friday, April 21 at 9:30 a.m. in the Wright Art Center Gallery on campus.

Held annually each spring semester, Portfolio Day is an effort to determine those students that will be awarded art scholarships for the coming year, while also giving high school students interested in art the opportunity to present their artwork for college scholarship consideration and review.

Thousands of dollars in one- to four-year scholarships are available on Portfolio Day to incoming freshman. These scholarships range from $1000 to $4000 and may be in addition to the University awards based on academic achievement.

Participants are encouraged to bring only their best artwork. Six to ten pieces should be sufficient and when possible, artworks submitted should be matted for best effect. If the aspirant is unable to mat his/her pieces, the art should, at the minimum, be presented neatly. Three-dimensional works, or a photograph of the work should the piece be too big, may be included in the portfolio.

Department chair, Bill Lester, will lead a guided tour of Delta State’s art facilities at 9:30 a.m. The tour presents an opportune time to ask questions and meet the faculty.

Judging for Portfolio Day will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. During the judging, participants and their parents/guardians will be able to enjoy a Delta Bus Tour. To be hosted by Dr. Luther Brown, Associate Dean for Delta Regional Development and Director of The Delta Center for Culture and Learning at Delta State University, the tour will lead participants in an exploration of the Delta, while also noting some of the rich, cultural stories that illustrate the roles the Delta has played in American history.

At noon, attendees will enjoy lunch on Delta State’s quadrangle lawn, with entertainment presented by the Delta Music Institute (DMI).

The event’s agenda will conclude at 1:30 p.m. with the scholarship presentation in the Wright Art Center Gallery.

High school juniors are invited to attend and submit their artwork for a critique, preparing them for Portfolio Day next year. Parents are also encouraged to attend.

Participants should bring an official school copy of their high school transcripts and school records of ACT/SAT scores.

The art department encourages all participants to schedule their review before arriving, as so the proper amount of time and space can be allotted. If you are unable to pre-register, walk-ins will be welcomed on the day of the event.
