Faculty Research & Scholarship Symposium, Wednesday & Thursday

By April 11, 2007General
The 2007 Faculty Research and Scholarship Symposium highlights original work completed by Delta State University faculty members and their collaborators during the 2006 — 2007 academic year. It is organized and sponsored by the DSU Research Committee (Dr. Chuck Smithhart, chair) with additional support from the DSU Office of Academic Affairs and the DSU Year of Health and Wellness Program.

The goal of this symposium is to provide a forum for faculty and their collaborators to share their professional work with their peers and with wider audiences. Of special interest for the DSU community and for higher education in Mississippi are strong elements of pedagogy-oriented scholarship, DSU student collaboration, and Mississippi Delta-focused research.

Several key benefits of this symposium make it a valuable addition to Delta State University’s slate of annual events. Participants benefit because their work receives colleagues’ critical input that can help them modify and improve the work in preparation for seeking future support (e.g. grants) and publication. Current and prospective students benefit because they are able to appreciate connections between the knowledge in their chosen field and the original scholarship that generates that knowledge. Too often, students do not understand that many university faculty have scholar-scientist roles in addition to their teaching role; thus they do not realize and take advantage of the full potential of higher education. The overall DSU community benefits because the research and scholarship of faculty, combined with and embedded in quality teaching, is at the very core of what makes the university indispensable for its stakeholders. In short, the research and scholarship of DSU faculty — particularly as it increases in quantity and quality — helps gain greater recognition and respect for the university’s overall mission, not only locally and regionally but also nationally and internationally.

Overall organization was coordinated by Dr. John Green, Dr. John Alvarez, Dr. Jeannie Falkner and Dr. Smithhart, with the help of many DSU staff, students, and faculty. We hope that you find the symposium valuable and welcome your comments and suggestions.
