The Leaders of Delta Health & Wellness, in conjunction with Delta State University, are sponsoring a Breast Cancer Awareness Forum, Tuesday, Oct. 10 in the Simmons Room of the Hugh Ellis Walker Alumni House on the DSU campus. In a collaborative effort between Delta State University and the Leaders of Delta Health & Wellness, a Breast Cancer Forum will be held Tuesday, October 10 in the Simmons Room of the Hugh Ellis Walker Alumni House on the DSU campus, with two sessions scheduled. The morning session will run 9 a.m. – 11 a.m., while the afternoon session is planned for 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.

The forum, comprised of three breast cancer survivors and three healthcare panelists, will allow attendees to not only hear uplifting stories of survival, but to ask questions on how to safeguard against the disease, including early detection.

“The statistics are terrifying when you think one out of every eight women will or have been diagnosed with some form of breast cancer in their lifetime. That’s the reason our group wanted to plan this event – it’s necessary. It’s necessary to get out information on prevention, early detection and the importance of self-examinations,” explained Rori Herbison, Chair of Leaders of Delta Health & Wellness and Director of University Relations at Delta State.

“But, more than that, it’s necessary to get out the message, that you can survive this. You can fight, and that’s the message our panelist want to share. We have a dynamic group of speakers and are hopeful all those who attend leave feeling informed, even inspired.”

The event, in conjunction with Delta State’s newly announced theme for the year, “Health & Wellness in the Delta,” will be moderated by Delta State’s First Lady, Pat Hilpert.

Light refreshments will be provided. In addition, all participants will receive an informational “goody-bag.” While not required, those planning to attend can make reservations with Meg Jones at the Center for Community and Economic Development, (662) 846-4842 or by email at megjones@deltastate.edu.

The Leaders of Delta Health & Wellness, in conjunction with Delta State University, are also planning the 3rd Annual Delta Health & Wellness Day, scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Bolivar County Expo Center. The committee is currently recruiting energetic members to aid in the planning process of this event. Please call Meg Jones at (662) 846-4842 if interested.
