By May 23, 2006General

“Peace of Mind,” a woodcut print created by Delta State senior art education major Charles Daniel of Greenville, will be just one of the many pieces on display at the 2006 Mississippi Collegiate Art Show in the Wright Art Center Gallery on the campus.

Delta State University will welcome the prestigious Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition to its campus, Saturday, April 1 with an opening reception and award ceremony to be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the Wright Art Center Gallery.

Designed to highlight and showcase the best work created by students in the year, the Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition is an annual event that typically alternates among universities and museums across the state. With Delta State University serving as this year’s host, the 2006 competition, again, strives to recognize exemplary artistic achievement by students attending four-year colleges and universities in Mississippi in one of 12 categories: clay, computer imaging, design, drawing, fiber, glass, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture.

In total, 92 works out of hundreds submitted will be on display.  Marcia Cohen, Atlanta-based painter and professor of art at the Atlanta College of Art served as juror for the competition. A Best in Show, three Awards of Excellence and Superior Achievement Awards in each medium will be given at 2:30 p.m. during the reception, with Cohen to be on hand to make remarks at the opening.

The public is cordially invited to attend the reception and ceremony and to view the art which will be on display through Friday, April 28.  For more information, please call the Delta State art department at (662) 846-4720
