Biographical:

  1. Nevin Sledge was born Feb. 6, 1921 in Duckhill, Mississippi to Annie and Pascal Earl Sledge. He and his wife, Brenda, were parents to two sons, Tommy Sledge and Wilson Sledge and two daughters, Melissa Sledge and Luanne Sledge. Mr. Sledge served in World War II from 1942 to 1946 in the U.S. Marine Corps as an aviation cadet where he achieved the rank of Captain.   After service he was an automobile dealer for approximately thirty years.  He was elected to the Mississippi State Senate from 1984 until 1993 when he decided not to run.  He has been very active in the community, served as Cleveland Alderman and was selected as Delta State University Outstanding Alumnus in 1987.  In 1992 he bought a farm and planted fruit trees and vegetables and is still active in the community.

 

Scope and Content:

The Nevin Sledge Collection contains a news clipping announcing his intention to run for Mississippi Senate, as well as a political card and political sign.  It also contains correspondence and reports on a Higher Education Study where Sledge served as Chairman.  Also included is a 1996 newspaper highlighting Sledge’s fruit orchard.
