Scope and Content:

This collection contains photocopies of the diary of Rebecca Dillman Walt during the period 1854 – 1857.  Rebecca Dillman Walt was the wife of Rufus Putnam Walt.  Originally from Higginsport, Ohio, she moved south with her husband and lived in Memphis, Tennessee.  He operated a mail packet steamer named the Rufus Walt.  The diary chronicles the everyday life of an upper middle class woman of the mid 1800’s.  She describes her sewing, visiting, attending Church, and her readings on self-improvement and religion.  Much of the diary reflects her search to become a better Christian.
