Biographical/Historical Sketch:
John Mathewson was in Montreal, Canada in 1867 with his family. Mathewson was the father of
at least 5 children, James (d 1867) and Eliza. John Mathewson had a nephew, Rolt Kelso
Mathewson and an Uncle Clark in Ireland who died in 1867. Sarah Mathewson is the recipient of
a letter, concerning the loss of her son, from Eliza. John Mathewson owned and operated a
manufacturing company in the Montreal area.
Scope and Content:
Two personal letters (1867, January 23, ND) Roth Kelso Mathewson wrote one letter to John
Mathewson, Eliza Mathewson wrote one letter to Sarah Mathewson. The Roth Kelso letter
comes from Belfast and tells of the death of an Uncle Clark. The letter gives a detailed account
of Uncle Clark’s last days. It also gives accounts of the Mathewson family in Ireland at the time.
Eliza Mathewson wrote Sarah a touching letter on the death of Sarah’s son.
