Scope and Content:

During the 1920’s and early 1930’s many Chinese families left the Mississippi Delta area due to a lack of educational opportunities.  Chinese children were not allowed to attend the white schools which resulted in legal action in 1924 to no avail.  In the mid 1930’s Chinese schools were established in the Delta. One of the most successful was the Chinese Mission School in Cleveland that came about due to the efforts of a white missionary from China, Reverend Ira Eavenson.  This was so successful that the First Baptist Church, along with local civic clubs, the county, and the Mississippi Baptist Convention worked together to construct a school on the outskirts of Cleveland.  The morning curriculum was that of the white schools and local area white teachers were employed as teachers and paid by the county.  The afternoons were instructions of Chinese.   Some children were boarded at the school.  After World War II Chinese children were allowed to attend the white schools to some degree, but it was not widespread until the 1950’s and 1960’s and eventually the Chinese school closed.  The Chinese Baptist Church collection contains documents, books, and members photographs during the period prior to its closing.
