The College of Education and Human Sciences offers an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) in Educational Administration and Supervision, designed for educators seeking licensure in school leadership and career administrators looking to advance their professional expertise. The program offers 2 educational tracks, in both initial licensure and career level, consist of 30 fully-online credit hours and can be completed within a year.
Our program prepares candidates for roles as principals, assistant principals, or district administrators in both public and private schools. Ed.S. Tracks in the Educational Administration and Supervision
Initial Licensure
The Initial Licensure track curriculum offers an in-depth study of leadership, organization, P-12 instruction, assessment and supervision, literacy leadership, and inclusion leadership. The learning outcomes are based on the National Educational Leadership Preparation Standards, the School Leadership Licensure Assessment content, and the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders. Completing the program and passing the SLLA result in a Mississippi AAA License in Educational Administration.
Career Level
The Career-level track curriculum focuses on study and application beyond the initial licensure program. The career track allows the practicing school leader to study and research best practices in leadership, ethics, learning, culture, supervision, educational technology, and organization. Completing the career-level Educational Specialist degree meets the requirements for a Mississippi AAA License in Educational Administration.

Admission Requirements
The following are the admission criteria for the EdS in Educational Administration and Supervision, effective fall 2020, as presented in the 2020-2021 DSU Graduate Catalog, and approved by the Mississippi Department of Education. Students seeking the Educational Specialist (EdS) degree in Education Administration and Supervision must meet the following minimum entrance requirements set forth by the College of Education and Human Sciences and the Division of Teacher Education, Leadership, and Research:
- A master’s degree from an institution fully accredited by one of the recognized accrediting agencies;
- A Class AA valid, renewable teaching certificate, or its equivalent, and a Master’s degree in a related field; EdS applicants seeking the career level track who hold a current administrator’s Educator License must provide documentation of that license.
- A grade point average of 3.25 on coursework completed for the master’s degree;
- A documented Praxis Core/Writing score of 162 or higher must be submitted (provided that the average score of the accepted cohort of candidates meets or exceeds the 50th percentile). Or a passing score on a department-administered writing assessment.
- Three years of school-related work experience;
- A letter of recommendation from the current school administrator that addresses the candidates’ ethics, leadership abilities and potential, collegiality, and ability to perform in the K-12 setting.
To provide the necessary evidence to evaluate whether the prospective student has met the above criteria, the applicant should submit the following documents to the DSU Office of Graduate Admissions:
- A copy of the student’s valid Educator License.
- Official copies of transcripts of all completed university coursework.
- Job verification form to provide evidence of years experiences teaching. (form available through the DSU Office of Graduate Admissions)
- Letter of recommendation from a school administrator.
- Official copies of the Praxis CORE Writing score or department writing score.
Curriculum
Note: Courses are scheduled in five-week increments in fall and spring semesters. EDL 656 extends the full semester. The Comprehensive Exam and SLLA (School Leadership Licensure Assessment) are taken in the final semester of coursework.

Licensure
The Educational Specialist in Educational Administration and Supervision degree program ONLY leads to licensure in the state of Mississippi. If you plan to teach in another state, you are responsible for contacting that state’s Department of Education to find out the requirements for a teaching license in that state. Initial Licensure
EAS Initial Licensure candidates must successfully complete a thirty-hour program. Twenty-one hours of study are on the foundations and application of school leadership and clinical experiences in the field. Nine hours are devoted to the psychology of learning, education foundations, research, and statistics. Seven program learning outcomes (PLO) are assessed within the program. Four assessments were developed by the Mississippi Educational Leadership Faculty Association (MELFA) and are required at all Mississippi universities. Additionally, the candidates must earn a passing score on the EAS Comprehensive Exams. Candidates must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25.
Students who graduate from the program in the initial school licensure will be able to demonstrate knowledge, application, and understanding of the following:
