College of Business renamed College of Business and Aviation

The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning Board recently approved the renaming of Delta State University’s College of Business to the new name of College of Business and Aviation.

Dr. Charles McAdams, Delta State’s provost and vice president for academic affairs, said the renaming should bring merited attention to one of the institution’s signature programs.

“I believe changing the name to the College of Business and Aviation helps promote two very important items,” said McAdams. “First, the name lets everyone know that we have an aviation program. This is significant as we are the only IHL institution with an aviation degree. Second, the name accurately reflects the academic home for this program.”

“Commercial Aviation is one of our signature programs for three very important reasons,” added McAdams. “First, it is the only program of its kind at a state university in Mississippi. Second, our program is one of the few programs in the region accredited by the Aviation Accreditation Board International. And finally, the success of our graduates demonstrates the quality of the program.”

McAdams added that commercial aviation is an important program for Delta State, and the graduates it produces as pilots, airport managers and logistics specialists are essential for economic growth of the region and country.

Dr. Billy C. Moore, dean of the College of Business and Aviation, is also pleased with the renaming.

“The college is rather comprehensive, preparing both candidates in the business field and the commercial aviation fields — aviation management, logistics and flight operations,” said Moore. “The renaming allows the college to more accurately reflect the range of preparation available to candidates enrolled in the varied programs within the college. The name change will also foster greater awareness of this unique program. Delta State University is the only senior college in the state of Mississippi to offer bachelor and master degrees in commercial aviation.”

Dr. Julie Speakes, chair of the Department of Commercial Aviation, is thrilled to gain more exposure for the program.

“I am thrilled that the IHL approved the name change to the College of Business and Aviation,” said Speakes. “This will help with advertising and branding, and we will no longer be the best kept secret at Delta State.”
