Tech Savvy hosts successful conference

Delta State University recently hosted the second annual Tech Savvy Conference featuring programming for local sixth through ninth grade girls.

Delta State University hosted a successful second annual Tech Savvy Conference for American Association of University Women (AAUW) Mississippi on March 21.

Tech Savvy is a national pilot program designed for sixth through ninth grade girls and their families to experience firsthand how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields can lead to exciting careers.

All of the workshops pertaining to STEM career fields and savvy skills were presented by STEM practitioners and educators.

Workshops included: Open Wide! (Dr. Carolyn Eubanks), Make Music with iPads (Delta Music Institute), Storm Chasers (WABG TV Meteorologist Tawana Andrew), Teaching Math Using M&Ms (Dr. Nicole House), GIRL FORCE! Finding Your Real Calling in Engineering (Baxter Healthcare), Don’t be Grounded! Come Fly with Us! (Dr. Julie Speakes), and Mealtime Mania (Dr. Monica Jones, Dr. Addie Herrod, Dr. Shelby Polk and Debbie Allen), and more.

The Savvy Skills Workshops were: Social Media Mania (Dr. Vicki Webster), Top Secret Cybersecurity (Ms. Nacole Adams) and Building Social Skills (Dr. Phyllis Bunn).

The adults attended a mini STEM session on Cybersecurity along with sessions on Financial Preparedness and College Readiness. They also received tips from a panel of STEM practitioners on how to direct their daughter’s path to STEM careers.

The panelists were Ellucian’s general manager for Technology Management Beverly Fratesi, Michelle Seard-Higgins, DMD of Michelle Seard-Higgins PLLC and Baxter Healthcare quality qssociate Dalanda Jalloh.

The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Chaka Norwood, OD of Norwood Family Eye Care, LLC with locations in Memphis and Jackson, Tenn.
