Fifty years ago, the Delta State College Class of 1962 was graduating from its beloved university and entering into the real world. Now, 50 years later, they will reunite and be recognized as the featured class at this year’s Homecoming, which is set for October 26 and 27. Members of the Delta State College Class of 1962 recently met at the Hugh Ellis Walker Alumni & Foundation House to plan their 50th class reunion. As part of this honor, they will be inducted in to the Alumni Association’s prestigious Golden Circle at the annual Alumni Awards and Gala Dinner at Walker Sillers Coliseum the Friday evening before Homecoming.

“I am happy to have this opportunity to celebrate a very important milestone in our lives,” said Bettye Mitchell (62). “I am excited about seeing my 1962 classmates and do hope that we will have a full house at Homecoming. Also, with pride, I invite fellow classmates to experience DSU and the town of Cleveland of today.”

The Golden Circle is comprised of graduates who are celebrating 50 years or more. Upon induction, members receive a gold medallion that bears the university seal and is worn so they can be identified.

“I think it’s neat that Delta State’s alumni association has chosen to recognize alumni who graduated 50 years or more ago,” said Dr. Johnny Arnold (58), president of the Golden Circle. “By bringing individuals into the Golden Circle, they get the opportunity to come out annually and also to welcome new inductees.”

The featured Class of 1962 in conjunction with the Golden Circle traditionally supports the Alumni Association’s Anniversary Scholarship, which is given to students who are not full-time students but will complete their degree within the academic term. For more information or to support this scholarship, contact a Golden Circle member or the Alumni Association.

“I look forward to welcoming the Class of 1962 back to their alma mater as they start the next step in their alumni experience,” said Jeffrey Farris, director of alumni affairs. “This group is instrumental in focusing on supporting the Anniversary Scholarship and the Veterans Atrium, housed in Jobe Hall.”
