Delta State University Archives and Museum will host the Lucy Somerville Howorth Award honoring Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer. The Lucy Somerville Howorth Award is presented every two years to honor outstanding women from the Delta region that have made contributions to society and have been recognized on a State and National level. This year’s recipient is Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer, Mississippi civil rights advocate. A reception and portrait unveiling will be held on Sunday, September 23, at 2:30 p.m., in the Howorth Seminar Room, first floor of the Capps Building. An exhibit pertaining to Hamer will continue until October 19.
Guest lecturer will be Dr. Linda Reed, noted scholar in African American history. Reed has served nine years as the director of the University of Houston’s African American Studies Program and two years as the national director for the Association of Black Women Historians. Reed has also authored many prize winning books and is currently completing a biography of Hamer, “I’m Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired: The Life and Times of Fannie Lou Hamer.”
