Representatives of the Delta State University Alumni Office were in the H. L. Nowell Union yesterday recruiting students to join the Student Alumni Association (SAA) during the Involvement Fair sponsored by the Union Program Council.  The SAA serves as a bridge between the current student body and Delta State alumni and friends. The group meets at least three times a semester at the Hugh Ellis Walker Alumni & Foundation House to brainstorm ideas for involvement in the Alumni Association’s signature events Pig Pickin’ and Homecoming.

“The Student Alumni Association is a fun way to get involved at Delta State University,” said Amy Scott, current vice president of SAA. “It has been a great experience to get to meet alumni from Delta State and hear their stories from when they were students.”

The SAA also serves as a forum for members to make announcements about other organizations and events happening on campus. One of SAA’s biggest projects each year is the Exam Survival Kits. These kits provide essential items for students, parents, faculty, staff, and community members to endure late night study sessions during exam week. These kits are available to be purchased at the end of each semester, and all proceeds raised go to the SAA scholarship fund, which is given to a rising senior for the fall and spring semester of their senior year.

“We’d like to encourage students to consider joining the SAA,” said Jordan Thomas, assistant director of alumni affairs. “Not only is it a great way to get involved on campus, but it also gives students a chance to become more familiar with alumni and make valuable connections that could be vital to them in the future.”

The SAA welcomes all Delta State students to apply for membership. For more information, contact advisor Cheryl Oleis at 662-846-4660 or Alumni Association staff members Jordan Thomas and Jeffrey Farris at alumni@deltastate.edu. Membership is $20 a year.
