Delta State University’s College of Business recently awarded the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award to Associate Professor of Economics Dr. Michelle Matthews. Presented each year at the annual College of Business Awards and Scholarship Recognition Banquet, the award is given as a special recognition to an outstanding College of Business faculty member who has demonstrated superior research, leadership, and teaching skills. The annual winner is selected from nominations submitted to the Dean’s Business Student Advisory Council.  The award is sponsored by AT&T Mississippi.

“I’m so honored to receive this award,” said Matthews. “I absolutely love what I do and I hope it shows. Students often expect economic classes to be awful and boring. I try to make sure that students see that it is fun and exciting, and most of all relevant to them.”

Division of Accountancy, Computer Information Systems, and Finance Chair Dr. Clint Wood commented, “Dr. Matthews’ success can be attributed to the facts that she loves the discipline she teaches and she loves her students.  These traits make her an invaluable member of our faculty.”

A native of Tunica, Matthews graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1997 with a degree in banking and finance and in 2003 she received her PhD. in economics. She has been working at Delta State since 2001. The primary classes she teaches are microeconomics and macroeconomics at the undergrad level and public finance and managerial economics at the graduate level. She has also taught international trade and finance, economic development, health economics, money and banking, and finance.

In addition to her teaching duties, Matthews serves as the associate director of the Delta State University Center for Economic Education and Research. She also serves  on the MBA and IMBA Curriculum Committee, and as the outreach coordinator of the Study Abroad Program.
