Delta State to host Third Annual OKRA Summer Day Camp

The Delta State University College of Education’s Healthy Campus/Community Initiative and the Division for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation will host the Third Annual Outdoor Kids Recreation and Activity(OKRA) Summer Day Camp for Delta area youth ages 6-11 from May 28 – June 8. Todd Davis, instructor and coordinator of recreation leadership under the “Dave Heflin Professorship” and Leigh Pickard, HCCI coordinator and registered dietician, will be directing this year’s events.

Week one will be offered from May 28-June 1 for youth 6-8 years old. Week two will be offered June 4-8 to for youth 9-11 years old. Camps will operate from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. -1p.m. on Fridays.

Registration for camp will begin on April 9 at 8 a.m. in the lobby of the Forest Wyatt Center for HPER. There is a $25.00 per youth application fee that must be paid at the time of registration with cash or check only
(checks should be made to OKRA Summer Camp). Completed registration forms should be delivered to Becky Roberson in the HPER secretary office on or after April 9. Registration forms will not be accepted until 8 a.m. on April 9.

The OKRA Summer Day Camp provides youth ages 6 – 11 a week-long opportunity to participate in structured indoor and outdoor recreational activities. The camp provides developmentally appropriate instruction fostering active participation in lifelong recreational sports and activities. Kayaking, disc golf, floor hockey, interactive and team-building games, non-competitive team sports, and numerous other recreational activities are some of the fun activities found at camp. The mission is to provide an active, positive, and exciting environment for youth to participate in a variety of recreational opportunities.

Ages 6-8: *May 28–June 1. *Camp will start Holiday Monday.
Ages 9-11: June 4– June 8.
9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday | Friday, 1p.m. dismissal.

Staffing:  OKRA Day Camp is directed and supervised by recreation professionals. Each recreation leader is first-aid and CPR certified.

Location: OKRA Day Camp is hosted on the Delta State University campus at the Forest E. Wyatt Center. The camp utilizes many facilities and fields on the Delta State campus including the aquatic center, intramural field, and quadrangle. Each camper is required to bring a towel, swimming suit, sunscreen, water bottle, and a healthy snack and lunch. A schedule for days that require swim attire will be provided once registered.

Enrollment: Due to staffing ratios of 15-1 and facility use policies, camp is limited to 180 participants on a first come, first serve basis. In order to fully enroll a child, you must:

1. Fill out an enrollment form – located ONLY in Forest E. Wyatt Center;
2. Sign an informed consent and complete a lifestyle survey;
3. Sign a youth release of liability form;
4. Pay a $25 per youth registration fee; (CASH or CHECK ONLY) and
5. Drop off all registration materials to camp headquarters at Forest E. Wyatt Center with the division secretary.
