Delta State University’s College of Business recently awarded the first Glenn and Mary Ellen Stafford Holloway Endowed Scholarship to James Bellipanni, a junior accountancy major from Belzoni. The scholarship is named in honor of Glenn and Mary Ellen Holloway and was initiated by their sons Glenn Holloway, Jr., who graduated from Delta State in 1984 with a degree in biology and chemistry, and John Holloway, Sr., who graduated from Delta State in 1988 with a degree in marketing.

The Glenn and Mary Ellen Stafford Holloway Endowed Scholarship awards junior and senior accounting majors with preferences to students from Sunflower, Bolivar, Washington, Leflore, and Humphreys counties in Mississippi. Dr. Clint Wood, chair of the Division of CIS, Accounting, and Finance, commented, “Education is an investment in life and success. This scholarship will be such an investment in many lives for years to come.”

“I was thrilled to receive such a scholarship, especially being the first recipient. I appreciate any support possible for college,” said Bellipanni. “ Receiving something like this definitely motivates me in the classroom. I’m especially grateful to the family that makes this possible and I’ll always appreciate seeing people who continue to support this university.”

Mary Ellen Holloway graduated from Cleveland High School in 1951 and graduated from Delta State in 1955 with a degree in education. She continued her education at Delta State and received a master’s degree in education in 1970 and an educational specialist degree in business in 1980. Holloway taught at Indianola High School, Inverness High School, and Indianola Academy. In 1970 she started teaching accounting at Mississippi Delta Community College and remained there for 33 years.

Glenn Holloway graduated from Indianola High School in 1947. He joined the National Guard in 1950 and served for two years. He spent five years working for the Indianola Motor Company then went on to work for Stratton Warren Hardware and the Southern Hardware Company where he retired in 2000.  He and Mary Ellen will celebrate 57 years of marriage this year.
