(MDNHA) Members of the public, Board members, and members of the planning team attending the public meeting at the Capps Center in Stoneville to learn about the new Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area.

The Board of the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area announced the beginning of its planning phase at a public meeting in Stoneville on November 16.  Almost 600 individuals and organizations, representing a broad cross section of the Delta’s museums, interpretive centers, tourism agencies, elected officials, and educators were invited to attend.

The team of professional planners that will assist the Heritage Area in developing its management plan was introduced.  The team is organized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and includes some of the county’s top experts in preserving and interpreting heritage and in heritage tourism.  The team includes both current and former managers of National Heritage Areas as well as planners who have successfully helped other regions benefit from their own heritage.

K. Lynn Berry, Heritage Area program director from the National Park Service, described the planning process.   Dr. Luther Brown, director of the Delta Center for Culture and Learning at Delta State, and interim manager of the Delta National Heritage Area, invited everyone with an interest in heritage to join the planning process.  For more information on the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area and to learn how you can become involved in the planning process, contact the Delta Center for Culture and Learning at 662-846-4311.
