Pimentel To Present Faculty Recital

By August 25, 2011General

Dr. Bret PimentelThe Delta State University Department of Music will present Dr. Bret Pimentel, assistant professor of woodwinds, in a faculty recital on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center.

Pimentel will perform the world premiere of Divertissement for multiple woodwinds and piano, a new work by composer Sy Brandon. The work was composed for Pimentel, with funding from a Co-op Press Commission Assistance grant, and is unusual because it calls upon the performer to play six woodwind instruments: flute, piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and saxophone. Pimentel will also perform works by Francis Poulenc, Paul Bonneau, and Ray Pizzi. He will be assisted by Dr. Kumiko Shimizu, associate professor of piano.

In 2009, Pimentel joined the music faculty of Delta State University, where he teaches woodwind instruments. He is at home with the classical solo repertoire of all the woodwind instruments, as well as chamber and symphonic music, jazz, rock, and pop. In addition to the major modern woodwinds, he is skilled at a number of folk, ethnic, and period woodwinds.

Pimentel’s varied career has included performances with Dave Brubeck, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the King’s Singers, the O’Jays, and more. His regular performing groups have included the Xenos Quartet, Countdown to Ecstasy, and the Georgia Double Reed Ensemble. For more information visit his website at www.bretpimentel.com.

The recital is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Music Department at (662) 846-4615.
