St. Columbia receives H.L. Nowell Service Award

Lauren St. Columbia of Helena, Ark., was awarded the 2011 H. L. Nowell Service Award by the Delta State University Alumni Association. Established in 1986, the award recognizes outstanding service and contributions to Delta State University by a member of the Student Alumni Association.

St. Columbia was president of Delta State’s Student Alumni Association and was a senator for the Student Government Association. She received her Bachelor of Science with an emphasis in biology and chemistry during Delta State’s Commencement on May 7.  St. Columbia plans to attend pharmacy school at Union University in Jackson, Tenn., in the fall.  She is the daughter of Joe and Rhonda St. Columbia.

H.L. Nowell served Delta State in several capacities during his 37 year tenure. He was Delta State’s first paid alumni secretary from 1950-1964. Nowell became an administrator closely identified with the students of Delta State.

The university’s student union was named in his honor in 1993.
