Delta State University and City of Cleveland to host youth summit

By February 28, 2011General

Approximately 500 high school students from across the state will converge on Cleveland and Delta State University Friday and Saturday, March 4-5, for the Mississippi Municipal League’s Fourth Annual Statewide Youth Leadership Summit. The purpose of the Summit is to bring city officials and high-school youth together to share their experiences of their programs and the impact made on the community. In addition, it establishes a forum where youth can interact and discuss issues and concerns that are important to them.

The Summit will kick-off at 7 p.m. Friday at the Cleveland Depot Library with a welcome reception co-hosted by the City of Cleveland and the City of Horn Lake. The opening session of the Summit will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Bologna Performing Arts Center on the Delta State University Campus.

Patrick House, Delta State graduate and recent winner of the 10th season of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” will be the keynote speaker. Following the opening ceremony, attendees will participate in breakout sessions throughout the day in the H.L. Nowell Union. Lunch will be provided in the Young Mauldin Dining Hall followed by a closing session led by the Delta State University Student Government Association.

Students participating in the Summit are encouraged to make a commitment to give back to the community through the Bolivar County Community Action for Progress by donating books for children, ages 3 -5, and toiletries for the local homeless shelter. Youth Councils are asked to bring those items pre-boxed for drop-off to the opening session.
