By October 1, 2010General

Major General Thomas Moore, Jr.The Delta State University National Alumni Association recently selected Major General Thomas Moore, Jr. as the 2010 “Alumnus of the Year.”  He will be honored on Oct. 15, at the Alumni Awards and Gala Dinner.

A native of Scott and a 1982 graduate of Delta State, Moore will also be inducted into the Delta State University Alumni Association Hall of Fame.

The Alumnus of the Year is presented to the alumnus who has made some significant contributions to human or institutional programs in which a situation, an institution or a movement has been materially changed for the better because of that individual’s personal participation.  Established in 2007, the Alumni Hall of Fame is extended to alumni and friends who have achieved professional distinction and made significant community service contributions at the local, national and/or international level and who have thus brought honor and distinction to Delta State University.

“The National Alumni Association is extremely proud to name Major General Thomas Moore” as the alumnus of the Year.” said John Cox, president of the Association.  “He exemplifies all attributes that the selection committee seeks in naming the annual recipient.”

Moore’s illustrious career with the United States Marines began in 1972 and toward the end of his tour he was selected for the rank of Brigadier General and served multiple tours as a general officer.

“But clearly the most demanding time I spent in almost 36 years was the 14 months I served in Iraq as the Chief-of-Staff at MNF-I,” he said. “Though demanding, it was tremendously rewarding because I worked directly with U.S. Embassy personnel and Iraqi officials as we tried to stand up a democratic government in this nation.”

After retiring as Acting Deputy Commander of the U.S. Central Command, and amassing an impressive collection of personal decorations, Moore and his wife Lee Ann relocated to Columbus where he is vice president of marketing, working unmanned aerial systems, for Stark Aerospace.

Moore’s Delta State connections run deep. His wife and mother are both Delta State graduates.  “You can see that Delta State has been very influential in my life and the lives of those that I hold most dear,” he said.
