Over the past several months, Delta State University’s top education officials have listened to the voices in Washington County. Principals of K-12 schools in Greenville and Leland approached Dr. Leslie Griffin, dean of the College of Education at Delta State, about offering administration courses at the Greenville Higher Education Center (GHED).

The Doctor of Education (Ed.D) program was highlighted on the WXVT-TV15 Delta Daybreak morning broadcast with an interview with Dr. Lynn Varner, associate professor of Education in the Thad Cochran Center for Rural School Leadership.

Starting this fall, there are plans to deliver an educational specialist in administration course for local teachers and administrators at the GHED.

“We are pleased to be a partner with the Greenville area and to help serve the people interested in what Delta State has to offer,” commented Elizabeth Joel, Delta State coordinator of Continuing Studies and GHEC liaison.

There were over 70 people interested in the graduate programs through Delta State but the majority interested desired educational administration courses. Dr. Jenetta Waddell, associate professor of Teacher Education and Educational Leadership and the division chair of Teacher Education, Educational Leadership, and Research, has been working with the College of Education faculty to identify the course offerings.

During the past week, a group of 16 students were highlighted to take the courses at the GHEC. Leland High School Principal, Jessie King and O’Bannon High School Principal, Willie Goins, have been two of the strong voices in asking for graduate courses at the Washington county location. “This is a tremendous opportunity for our teachers and administrators to be a part of,” stated King.
